By Dianne E. Butts:

Is it possible to find God in all this talk about the end of the world  and the Mayan calendar?

For years I have heard the Mayan calendar ended on 12/21/12. Many people were speculating about or even predicting cataclysmic events that could bring about the actual end of the calendar for all mankind.

In other words, then end of the world.

Well here we are. And we’re still here.

Some people predicted the earth’s poles could reverse—the north pole becoming south and the south pole become north. The result of the world’s poles “rolling over” could be devastating, possibly the same event that caused the demise of the dinosaurs. Others predicted volcanic eruptions or devastating natural phenomena, possibly so severe it could make our planet uninhabitable.

December 21, 2012 marked “the conclusion of a vast, 5,125-year cycle in the Mayan calendar” reports the article, “Mayan calendar ends; world doesn’t”, on CBSnews.com. That article reports people showed up to the Mayan city of Chichen Itza in t-shirts sporting the words “The End of the World: I Was There” and that the end of the world was a popular hashtag topic on Twitter.

Yet the date has come and gone and we’re still here.

While some people may have been fearful of “The End,” others make fun of it. Perhaps when the day’s end progressed around the earth we felt a silent sigh of relief.

However, there’s one thing about this whole deal that I take very, very seriously. And that is that I believe it has–in some less tangible way–diminished the seriousness of the situation our world is truly in.

The truth is, this world is not going to last forever. There is an end coming—an end to the world as we know it. I believe that not because the Mayans said so (actually they didn’t, they just said their calendar ended and some people took that idea and ran with it) but because God said it.

We read about it the Bible in passages like Matthew 24 and I highly recommend you read that whole chapter. Here’s an excerpt:

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:4-14, NIV 1984).

Some people may laugh and put me the class of kooks. I don’t care. I absolutely believe it will happen just as Jesus predicted. Many Christians are sounding the warnings these very days. We look around and see clearly what is happening in our world and we’re not laughing.

This is serious business. Are you laughing at me? Or are you heeding the warning? If you’re listening to the warning, then you just might find (the true) God in all this talk about the Mayan end of the world.
