Finding God While Cleaning Your House

By Karen O’Connor

Finding God while cleaning your house may be as much a surprise to you as it was for me when I had this experience. I remember a day when I rushed from one room to the next, dusting furniture, vacuuming carpets, picking up books and papers and clothing and putting them back where they belonged. I was in a great hurry to get finished.

But then I stopped in front of a wall of family photos. As I wiped down each one, tears came to my eyes. I was taken back to that day when my daughters posed for pictures on the balance beam at the gymnastics studio, and the time my son hung upside down on the jungle gym in our yard, his hair flying! There were vacation and graduation pictures and beautiful reminders of holiday affairs with grandmas and grandpas. What memories they evoked, bringing me back once again to how God had shown his love for me through all of these people.

I completed my chores, sat down with a cup of green tea, and thought about what a blessing it is to keep my house in order, to take care of the little things and the big, from a knick-knack on a shelf to a photo on the wall to a houseful of furniture. These possessions are mine for just a little while. Then they will pass on to someone else when I’m gone.

But in the meantime I’m going to continue, and I hope you will as well, to keep on finding God while cleaning your house.
