Finding God in the Bad News

By Karen O’Connor

I opened the newspaper today and was immediately drawn into the tragic news of the dozens of people killed at the soccer match in Egypt, the fighting in Syria, the mud-slinging among American presidential candidates, and the four Britons who admitted to a bomb plot on the London Stock Exchange. And yet, the more I read the more I began finding God in the bad news.

How could this be? Because he is the ‘good news’—the only one we can turn to when we’re overwhelmed with the condition of our world. As the creator of the universe and the author of life, he is the one who rescues us from sin, heals our hurts, covers us with love, and restores us to sanity. God is not a dictator—so bad things will happen to good people and bad––but he is ever available to help us through our distress.

Now, instead of being upset and depressed over current events I am making it a habit to turn to God for guidance and grace and the wisdom to do his will. At times such as these I take comfort in the Serenity Prayer of the 12 Step Programs (originally written by American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr).

“God grant us the serenity to accept the things we

cannot change, courage to change the things we can,

and the wisdom to know the difference.”

We cannot turn our backs on the world. We are part of it. But we can pray for ourselves and our fellowman, and in doing so we will be finding God in the bad news—and in the good!

Find God in Music

I expect to find God in music at church during worship or on a Christian radio station. But what comes as a surprise is to experience God even when listening to Bach or Beethoven, Celine Dion or Josh Groban, or the inspiring jazz piano of Beegie Adair. Not only do I enjoy the melodies and the song lyrics but I like contemplating God’s hand in every note. He gave the artists the talent to write the music, the singers and instrumentalists the ability to perform, and listeners the ears to hear. What a joy it is to put on a CD in my car or tune into Pandora Radio on my iPhone and be carried away by the various choices I make.

I’m reminded at such times of the importance of music throughout the ages, even during Bible times:

“Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better . . .” (1 Samuel 16:23).

Perhaps the most well known reference to music in the Bible is Psalm 150:

Praise the LORD.

Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD.

Find God in music and you will never be without comfort and peace.

… He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”
