Wondering, ‘How do I find God?’ Here’s how one woman, Lane, found a new relationship with God through his son, Jesus.
By Lane Jordan:
Though I had been brought up to attend church, I had never been taught how to find God.
I had never heard that God can become a personal friend and that I could have a personal relationship with Him. I thought having a relationship with God meant attending church and being good.
I did attend a youth organization in high school, where I started to learn about God and His son Jesus and I made a decision to follow Him.
However, as college and life trials came into my life, I began to forget some of the basic principles of following God. I forgot that when we place Him first in our life with our thoughts, actions and heart attitude, He is able to lead us along a path that He has designed for our best.
My life was falling apart, and I didn’t know where to turn. In desperation, I called out to God and asked Him to help me.
Within a few days of that prayer, I ran into a college friend who invited me to church. After hearing the sermon, I bowed my head and began to pray. This time, my prayer was real. I remember asking for God to take over my life since I was making a mess of it. And just to make sure He knew I meant business, I said I would go to Africa as a missionary (which I did not want to do) if only He would help me. I was pretty desperate.
The next day I could tell I was a changed person.
A huge change came over my attitudes, thoughts, bad language and view of life. I started to care, really care about others. I had an optimism that was brand new to me. My depression went away. My circumstances hadn’t changed but inside of me I had the Holy Spirit giving me power, love and a purpose.
There really aren’t words to describe what happened to me except to use the ones from the New Testament, “All I know is that once I was blind but now I see.”
I found God but He was there all the time. He was just waiting for me to turn to Him, seek His face and ask Him to find me.
For those of you who are reading this and wanting help in your life, understand that we all live in a fallen and depraved world: a world that will try to keep you down. It takes courage to make a stand for change and to reach out to your heavenly Father. I pray that you will make that step.
It doesn’t mean you will never struggle again with problems or emotional ups and downs. But Christ will be at your side through it all, and offers the greatest gifts: salvation and eternal hope.
