Finding God While Dusting and Vacuuming

By Karen O’Connor:

Wednesdays or Fridays are my days to clean our house. I like to do so when no one is around and those are my husband’s days away from home. I accomplish more without anyone to distract me. However, in recent weeks I found a welcome distraction as I realized I was finding God while dusting and vacuuming.

As I left each room after cleaning it I felt lighter, brighter, and more content. I appreciated surveying the order and beauty I brought to each surface—from furniture to carpets, and pictures to lamps. Cleaning was becoming a work of art for me. Instead of dreading it, I enjoyed it. I was reminded of God’s words on the subject.

In all the work you are given, do the best you can.

Work as though you are working for the Lord,

not any earthly master (Colossians 3:23 the Bible).

This made all the difference. I was cleaning for God, not just for my family.  And on the spiritual plane, I can do the same by dusting and vacuuming my soul.

Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind (1 Peter 2:1 the Bible).

Now when housecleaning day approaches, I look forward to it for I know that I will find God while dusting and vacuuming and come away feeling better spiritually, mentally, and physically.
