On a hot day, what could be more refreshing than a cold drink? Not just any drink, however, but one that is delicious to the taste and nutritious too. My favorite is a fruit smoothie. Finding God in a fruit smoothie makes the experience even better.
By choosing from the abundance of fresh fruits the Lord has given us, we can prepare a drink that will quench our thirst and remind us of how he provides for us in creative ways. I like a combination of mango and pineapple or peach and melon. How about strawberry-banana or blueberry-papaya? The choice is yours when you make your own.
In addition to the fruit we eat, there is also fruit of the Spirit. “. . . love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23 the Bible.) When we express these virtues in our daily lives—in other words as we walk in the fruit of the Spirit––we are examples to others of God’s love and protection.
Sometimes, however, it’s a challenge to express the fruit of the spirit. I know this from experience. Recently my husband and I were invited to a dinner party where we’d be in contact with someone whose negative attitude, with frequent judgmental comments, can be overwhelming.
I decided ahead of time that with God’s grace I would bring my best self to that person and each person I talked with. That meant being kind and loving, joyful, gentle, and peaceful—and controlling my tongue. What a difference it made! Not only was I surprised at the response I received from the person I mentioned, but I felt good about myself. We exchanged a pleasant conversation and my husband and me were asked to join that couple on a camping trip next summer.
No matter what we experience in life, there is always a parallel between the natural and the supernatural. Nothing is wasted. Finding God in a fruit smoothie is one simple way to honor God and give him glory. And sharing the fruit of the Spirit in our behavior toward others, is another way.
