By Karen O’Connor:
It may sound ridiculous to claim that one can find God in a piece of dark chocolate. But that’s exactly what happened for me today. I came home from a visit and lunch with a friend and just had to have a little something for dessert. I’m off of pies and cakes and ice cream. I don’t need the calories or the fat. But a small sweet treat would be just right. So I reached for a Ghirardelli chocolate square in a bowl on my kitchen table. I allow myself just one a day.
I popped it into my mouth and savored the bittersweet mixture. Suddenly, I thought of God’s Word. His promises often strike me the same way. Raw, sometimes harsh truth, combined with words that are as pleasing as honey, reminding me that life has a measure of both bitterness and sweetness. We will not have lasting pleasure until we reach heaven.
Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but hishands also heal (Job 5:17-18).
That has been my experience throughout my life. God corrects me when I wander from his will but he also comforts me and draws me back to him, never leaving nor forsaking me.
Finding God in a piece of dark chocolate is another unexpected place to find God and yet there he is when we turn our attention to him in everything we think, say, and do.
