By Karen O’Connor:
What fun it was for me to find God while making scones at a local farmhouse during my recent trip to Ireland.
Our tour group stepped into the thatched-roof dwelling with tables laden with bowls of flour, sugar, cinnamon, butter, eggs, baking powder and so on. Next we donned hairnets, plastic gloves, and aprons. Then we listened to the master chef teach us what to do.
Each person at our tables of five took a turn stirring and mixing until the combination of ingredients was just the right consistency. When we finished our part, she whisked away the baking pans holding our little mounds of dough and baked them until golden brown. The best part was eating them warm with jam and butter and whipped cream. Yum!
This experience brought to mind how God feeds his children, you and me, with the bread of life––his grace and guidance, peace and protection––the food for our souls that keep us going spiritually, just as baked bread, whether scones or whole wheat slices or bagels or buns keep us going physically.
Finding God while making scones is just another way God shows up in my life when I least expect it. I’m so grateful for that.
