By Karen O’Connor:
While seeing the castles of Ireland, I ended up finding God.
My husband and I recently spent three weeks in Ireland enjoying hearty potato and leek soup, staying in beautiful old hotels, watching Irish dancers and singers, and strolling the streets of quaint towns and villages. The castles of Ireland took my breath away, especially as I thought about my faith.
As I listened to tour guides share the history of these historic buildings–some in ruins, others in good repair and operating as lodgings to this day–I saw the parallel between the protection these fortresses provided for people of ancient times and the protection God provides as described in the Bible in Psalm 91:1-2 (NIV Bible).
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
And I am reminded of the famous hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is our God” written about 1527 by the great theologian Martin Luther. Here the melody and lyrics praise God for his protection and care:
A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing . . .
We no longer need to shield ourselves in a stone castle or fort in the physical sense, but the threat to our moral and spiritual lives is as great as ever and only God can be our true fortress. I am so glad that finding God in the castles of Ireland brought me back to the assurance of His constant care, protection, and guidance.
