Find God in Doubt

By Karen O’Connor:

I remember a time in my life when I didn’t know what to believe. I was slogging my way through a forest of beliefs and religious philosophies following a devastating divorce from my husband and a break in my relationship with my father. One week I attended a Catholic Mass. Another week I visited a Religious Science service and on yet another Sunday I sat in the back row of a Presbyterian church. I was determined to find God in doubt.

I was certain of one thing. I needed hope and help. Then on a Monday morning while returning from a run along the beach I plopped down on a bench overlooking the ocean and cried out. “God, who are you? If you’re there, do you care anything about me?”

Just as soon as I finished my plea I was reminded of a verse from the Bible that I had learned in a study group weeks before, only this time it held fresh meaning specifically for me.

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

It was then my doubt vanished, replaced with the living words of Jesus Christ himself. I knew then that he is the way to God the Father and he would guide me to the answers I was looking for regarding my children and my work and my parents. I longed for peace and I was very sure I would not be able to achieve it on my own. I didn’t know what lay ahead but I was excited to find out by focusing on what God had to say in the bible. I made a commitment then to join a church, to study the bible, and to ask questions.

It is possible for anyone to find God in doubt. As it says in the Bible:

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).

Greg Koukl from Stand to Reason takes on the question of God and doubt in this inspiring video.
