Finding God in the Colorado Forest Fires

By Dianne E. Butts:

I talked to my friend Tanya on June 14th.

“We were evacuated last Sunday,” she said. “The fire is now on our mountain. We’re in a hotel room. My husband gets stressed when he thinks we might lose the house, but we’re doing okay.”

I know Tanya and her family have a deep faith in God and they are trusting Him, no matter what happens. When times get tough, people who know God often find their faith is strengthened. Though the circumstances are horrible, that’s how people might be finding God in the Colorado forest fires.

The High Park fire is now the most destructive in terms of the number of homes destroyed in Colorado history, destroying 248 homes as of June 25th. The High Park fire started June 9 by a lightning strike and by June 25th had burned more than 83,000 acres, killing one person.

The fire is in northern Colorado. My home is in southern Colorado, but the smoke had found its way to my neighborhood even before the Waldo Canyon fire started on Saturday, June 23, and quickly grew to 1,000 acres.

Photo of the Waldo Canyon fire taken from my back porch at 5:45 p.m. on June 25, 2012. The tallest mountain on the left is Pike’s Peak.

Record-breaking high temperatures, no rain, and high winds have created tinder dry conditions in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Several towns, including Manitou Springs, Chipita Park, and Green Mountain Falls have been evacuated.

In the days leading up to the Waldo Canyon fire, twenty wildfires were started in Teller County, the county just west of Colorado Springs, the work of a suspected arsonist. At the time of this writing, fire investigators have not been able to get in to the area to investigate what started the Waldo Canyon fire. The fire is too intense and unpredictable at this time. The local news stations have covered the fire non-stop for more than 48 hours at this time.

Fires of this magnitude can create their own weather:

A “pyrocumulus cloud” formed over the Waldo Canyon fire on both June 24th and another one is forming as I write this on June 25th. According to Inciweb.org,

“A pyrocumulus, or fire cloud, is formed from thermal combustion. This cloud causes [convection] and may produce defined vertical development of a plume.”

My friend Tanya told me: “the new maps have our mountain listed as ‘Crist’ mountain, but we know it as ‘Christ’ mountain and most people around here call it that.” Two weeks later, Tanya is still out of her home.

As we watch these fires and whatever developments occur next, those affected—whether as victims evacuated, those who lost homes or property or a loved one, or those who are fighting the fires—can be assured that many Christians are praying for them. Most of all we pray they are finding God in the Colorado forest fires.

Finding God While Making Scones

By Karen O’Connor:

What fun it was for me to find God while making scones at a local farmhouse during my recent trip to Ireland.

Our tour group stepped into the thatched-roof dwelling with tables laden with bowls of flour, sugar, cinnamon, butter, eggs, baking powder and so on. Next we donned hairnets, plastic gloves, and aprons. Then we listened to the master chef teach us what to do.

Each person at our tables of five took a turn stirring and mixing until the combination of ingredients was just the right consistency. When we finished our part, she whisked away the baking pans holding our little mounds of dough and baked them until golden brown. The best part was eating them warm with jam and butter and whipped cream. Yum!

This experience brought to mind how God feeds his children, you and me, with the bread of life––his grace and guidance, peace and protection––the food for our souls that keep us going spiritually, just as baked bread, whether scones or whole wheat slices or bagels or buns keep us going physically.

Finding God while making scones is just another way God shows up in my life when I least expect it. I’m so grateful for that.

Enjoy this You Tube video on how to make delicious and fail-proof scones with Julie O’Hara.

Find God in Bible Prophecy: Rebuilding Babylon

By Dianne E. Butts:

Rebuilding Babylon

Saddam Hussein, the fifth President of Iraq, served from July 16, 1979 to April 9, 2003. During his more than twenty years in power, Saddam worked toward rebuilding the ancient city of Babylon.

If we look, we can find God in Bible prophecy about rebuilding Babylon.

According to an About.com article titled Saddam Hussein’s Babylonian Palace:

“Saddam Hussein said that Babylon’s great palaces and the legendary hanging gardens of Babylon (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world) would rise from the dust.”

What does history–including that recorded in the Bible–say about Babylon?

Revelation 14:8, 16:19, and chapters 17-18 talk about the fall of Babylon in the End Times. For these prophecies to take place, the literal city of Babylon must again exist in the land of Shinar. The remains of ancient Babylon are found in present-day Iraq about 55 miles south of Baghdad.

Babylon flourished in 1894 BC under the Amorite king Hammurabi who created the short-lived Babylonian Empire, but it quickly dissolved after his death. It rose to power again and was the seat of the Neo-Babylonian Empire from 612 to 539 BC.

Nebuchadnezzar II ruled from 605 BC to 562 BC and, according to the Bible, conquered Judah and Jerusalem and sent the Jews into exile in Babylon. Wikipedia says, “He is credited with the construction of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.”

Flash forward to today in modern-day Iraq:

The About.com article by ,says Saddam’s workers began reconstructing the 600-room palace of King Nebuchadnezzar II in 1982 right on top of the ancient ruins:

“The original bricks, which rise two or three feet from the ground, bear ancient inscriptions praising Nebuchadnezzar. Above these, Saddam Hussein’s workers laid more than 60-million sand-colored bricks inscribed with the words, ‘In the era of Saddam Hussein, protector of Iraq, who rebuilt civilization and rebuilt Babylon.’ The new bricks began to crack after only ten years.

“Adjacent to Nebuchadnezzar’s ancient palace and overlooking the Euphrates River, Saddam Hussein built a new palace for himself…a monstrous hill-top fortress surrounded by miniature palm trees and rose gardens. The four-storey palace extends across an area as large as five football fields.”

Ceilings and walls in the palace depicted 360-degree murals from ancient Babylon, Ur, and the Tower of Babel.

About.com continues:

“When American troops entered Babylon in April, 2003, they found little evidence that the palace had been occupied or used. Saddam’s fall from power brought vandals and looters… During the war, Western troops pitched tents in the vast empty rooms at Saddam Hussein’s Babylonian palace.”

U.S. Marine Daniel O’Connell, Gunnery Sergeant, took photographs of many of these sites in 2003 and you can see 26 of his photos in a photo gallery on About.com.

So what do you think? Is Saddam’s rebuilding of Babylon a sign of the End Times? Will Babylon will be rebuilt to a greater degree and be occupied by the Antichrist? Whatever actually comes about, by looking in the Bible, we will find God in Bible prophecy about rebuilding Babylon.

Here’s a video about the history of Babylon, from Discovery Channel: The Babylon Mystery Part 1.
