Finding God While Exercising at the Gym

By Karen O’Connor

I am finding God while exercising at the gym several days a week. I didn’t expect that to happen but it did. My husband and I have made many good friends there. As we all pedal a bicycle, lift weights, walk the treadmill, or stretch on floor mats, we notice how much we have in common. In fact, we enjoy our little community so much that we’ve started celebrating birthdays once a month at a neighborhood café following our workouts.

These experiences have gone far beyond fitness, conversation, and shared meals. I’m discovering the blessing of God on my life thought this activity and in the new relationships with so many wonderful men and women. I feel connected, appreciated, understood, and loved—yes, even loved.

The bible reminds us to “. . . consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24 NIV).

One of the best places I know of to put these words into practice is the gym in the early morning when we’re fresh from a night of sleep and preparing for our day at work or home.

Finding God while exercising at the gym has opened an entirely new way for my husband and me to relate to other people, take care of our bodies, and to boost our faith in the one who made us and is by our side all the time.
