Paul Simon’s song about the girl with Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes is full of interesting life metaphors. We’ve probably all felt “empty as a pocket” at some point. It’s an unwelcome feeling that creeps into your system when you least expect it. The good news is you may be closer to Finding God When You’re Empty as a Pocket.
The truth may more accurately be that you’re rich with diamonds on the soles of your shoes, but acting like you’re empty as a pocket. This view doesn’t fit the view God intends for you and is a reminder of this personal meditation.
I was walking on the beach and Jesus was walking toward me pulling a little red Radio Flyer wagon. The wagon was full of money and He was bringing some to me. Just as I got close to Him, a stranger ran up and grabbed the little red wagon and ran off with it. I was so upset thinking someone had taken my provision from the Lord. When I got to Him, Jesus looked at me and as I was about to protest about what to do next, He just smiled and stepping aside so I could see behind Him, He showed me that right behind Him was another wagon of money, and another and another, as far as I could see down the beach. He laughed at the man who stole the wagon and said to me that we don’t have to steal His provision because there’s always more where that came from.
What a helpful reminder of where our supply in this world really comes from. The inner “theologian” in you may believe you’re empty as a pocket, but that feeling stems from a sense of being separate from our Creator, the One who supplies all our need.
If you’ve ever been empty and you’re not sure how to get renewed or uplifted, then take a peek in your closet and pull out those shoes…you know, the ones with the diamonds on the soles. You’ve got them. You’ve been walking in them ever since you put your hand in God’s pocket and signed up to walk the way with Him.
Walk today, sparkling with the joy of knowing you are living in a multi-faceted world where love is abundant, work overflows, challenges keep you strong and hope keeps you moving forward. The truth is you have every reason to believe that you are closer to Finding God when you’re empty as a pocket. Go on and sparkle today…you’re beautiful and radiant!
